A potted history....
Originally, starting in the late 1950’s, boating on the West Float Dock system was carried out mainly by the 14th Wallasey and 10th Wallasey Sea Scout Groups, and to a lesser extent by the 5th Wallasey Scout Group. These groups worked out of a ‘nissan’ hut situated on Canada Creek (which has now been filled in), holding once a month boating sessions, usually on a Sunday.
Over a 20 year period, the groups declined until only the 33rd Wallasey Sea Scout Group (formerly the 14th Wallasey) was left actively boating. Having been offered a bigger ‘Seagull’ boathouse by the owners, Liverpool Victoria Rowing Club, the 33rd Wallasey moved to a dock-front location next to the Henry Meols Rowing Club.
Unfortunately, following sustained vandalism, and a fire in the late 1980’s, the boathouse and its neighbouring boathouses were abandoned, with the Birkenhead Sea Scouts moving to Morpeth Dock, and the 33rd Wallasey moving close to the Liverpool Victoria Rowing Club’s new building on Poulton Quay. Here the 33rd Wallasey carried out their boating activities out of a 20ft storage container.
After years of negotiation, planning and a lot of hard work, the 33rd Wallasey Sea Scout Group and Wallasey District Scouts were awarded a grant from Citylands (through Mersey Development Corporation). It was with this money that the Wallasey District Scout Boathouse was built in its present location, and was up and running by 1996.
The Boathouse Crew, along with the 33rd Wallasey Sea Scout Group who continue to be the resident group, help to maintain the building, the boats and the equipment, and run the varied courses available at the Boathouse. It is also through their hard work and dedication that the Boathouse has developed and grown to the point where, in 2010, we were successfully inspected and formally recognised as a Royal Yachting Association Recognised Teaching Centre (RTC).
The Boathouse, and its access to the West Float Dock is a great asset to Wallasey District Scouts, and as such we carefully manage all of our activities under the guidelines of the Scout Association. We are justifiably proud of the fact that we have never suffered a major incident since we started boating on the Docks over 50 years ago!
We are looking forward to the next 50 years of boating down at the Boathouse, and would welcome you to come and join us in our activities.
